Getting two different results from a pregnancy test puts you in an uncomfortable in-between, and that uncertainty deserves a real answer, not more guessing.

At Echoz, a registered nurse administers a medically verified pregnancy test and can walk you through your results with clarity and care. Learn more about what our accredited medical clinic offers and schedule a confidential appointment today.

Why Results Can Vary

Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG, which your body produces after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. In early pregnancy, hCG levels are low and rising rapidly, roughly doubling every 2 to 3 days. That rapid change is why two tests taken days apart can show different results.

Common Reasons for a False-Negative

A false-negative result when you’re actually pregnant usually comes down to timing. Several common factors can throw off accuracy:

  • Testing too early, before hCG has built up enough to detect
  • Diluted urine from drinking a lot of fluids before testing
  • Testing later in the day rather than with first morning urine
  • Not waiting the full recommended time before reading the result

Common Reasons for a False-Positive

False-positives are less common, but they do happen. A few things can produce a positive result that doesn’t reflect an ongoing pregnancy:

  • A very early pregnancy loss, where hCG was present but the pregnancy didn’t progress
  • Residual hCG remaining in your body after a recent miscarriage or birth
  • An evaporation line read after the recommended time window has passed
  • Fertility medications that contain hCG

When Results Conflict With Each Other

If you’ve gotten a mix of positive and negative results, the most likely explanation is timing. A test taken a few days earlier may have missed hCG that a later test caught. It’s also possible that one test was read outside the recommended window, or that an early pregnancy loss occurred between tests.

Either way, a medically verified pregnancy test with an ultrasound is the only way to get a clear picture of what’s actually happening in your body. Echoz is here to help.
